Joosie Loosie

Joosie Loosie or Juicy Lucy or Jucy Lucy

We saw this show on the Travel Channel (Man vs. Food to be exact) where they showcased these restaurants both claiming to have the best ‘cheese-filled’ burger. One place calls the burger a “Juicy Lucy” and the other calls it a “Jucy Lucy”… I will go with “Joosie Loosie” so there is no confusion 🙂

Anyway– My hubby was telling me how bad he wanted to have one so instead of paying hundreds for plane tickets to go whereever it was they had these burgers, I created my own version. They were amazing. Next time we will try it with blue cheese or pepper jack cheese (they stressed on the show to NEVER use cheddar cheese.. don’t ask me why)!

Save Recipe

  • (makes 4 burgers)
  • 1.5 Lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 c. oatmeal (optional)
  • 3-4 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder (or to taste)
  • salt & pepper (to taste)
  • parsley flakes (to taste)
  • Velveeta cheese, sliced and cut into little squares (so they look like mini cheese slices-- on the show they used American cheese, like Kraft Singles, but we wanted to use Velveeta instead)
  • hamburger buns
  • your favorite hamburger toppings/condiments

  • Combine beef, oatmeal, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, pepper and parsley in a bowl. Separate into 8 parts and flatten out into thin patties. Place some cheese (we loaded the cheese on) on top of 4 of the patties and then cover with the 4 remaining patties. Press the edges of the patties to form a tight seal (you don't want the cheese oozing out before you bite into it). Grill or cook in a pan for a few minutes on each side-- just like you would grill/cook any other burger (use your best judgement for done-ness... you don't want to cut in it too much because you don't want the cheese coming out). Serve on hamburger buns and top with your favorite toppings.

I saw that TV show too!!! I hadn't ever heard of the Joosie Loosie's before I saw that show last week. Thanks for posting the recipe, my whole family drooled while watching tv that night 😉

  2. Melody says:

That looks great and not much work. I like that! This makes me want to make burgers soon. I love summer!

  3. Amy says:

Juicy Lucy's are found in Minneapolis and St. Paul, in MN. That's where I live!!!! The two restaurants that fight over who makes the better Jucy are the 5-8 Club in Mpls, and Matts (??) in St. Paul. I've eaten the Juicy at the 5-8 Club and they are AMAZING!!!! Best burger I've ever eaten. I actually made them for a party a few weeks ago and I have a craving for them again……yummy!

I have had similar burgers, and I thought you were SUPPOSED to use cheddar. Of course, they also had bacon in the middle. I am guessing they stress not using cheddar because velveeta will melt better. You won't get the gushy cheese ooze with cheddar like you do with velveeta.

I recently received a Kreative Blogger Award and I am supposed to pass it on. You probably have received several of these in the past but I thought I'd send you another one. Thanks for all the recipes, for sharing the Cafe Rio Pork salad and introducing me to the Pioneer Woman! See my post on the award here.

I live in St. Paul, where the Jucy Lucy was "invented." I think they sound so good in concept, but in practice, I've never had one that where the burger wasn't completely dry and cooked over medium-well. I'm glad you liked them, though. 🙂

  8. Erica says:

Really??? The one we made was REALLY juicy! I think its easier when you make it yourself because you can make it to the doneness you want. We made ours about medium-well and they were still dripping with joosie-ness 🙂

So I just wanted to tell you that I tried to make this for Father's DAy for my hubby and we were so excited to bite into a juicy, cheesy hamburger and when we went to take our first bites we discovered–there was no cheese anywhere inside the hamburger!!! Nope, we didn't forget to put it in the middle–it all came out during grilling I guess. I just reread the post and wanted to say "ditto" on pinching the sides together or else you'll lose all your cheese lol. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it looks SO good and we are definetly going to try to make it again:)

  14. Erica says:

Oh no! I am so sad it all leaked out. We REALLY pinched the sides together and made extra sure that there were no holes at all. Give em' another shot. They are SO worth it!

I saw the same show and made my own burger too! I used provolone on the inside, and I also mixed the ground beef with Feta, then topped the burger with cooked onions and red bell pepper.

    It was fantastic.

  16. Miriam D Padilla says:

Longhorn Burgers in San Antonio makes one called the "Horn" and it is stuffed with cheddar and jalapenos, topped with sauteed onions. Just another delicious variation.

I live in St.Paul…this was the first thing we went hunting for when we moved here after seeing it on Man vs. food. I had one last week they are outstanding. If you ever feel you need to try one in St.Paul head over to The Nook. All around best place to have one. I love your recipes by the way. Great blog!!
