This Skillet Sausage and Rice is one of my favorite easy dinner recipes. I love how easy this dish is to throw together, not to mention how tasty the finished product is. Plus it cooks up fast all in one pot, making clean up a breeze. My husband took all the leftovers to work and requested it for dinner again the next week. My kids loved it too. All around this was a great win for a good family-pleasing dinner. A special thanks to Paige for sharing this recipe with us, it was a favorite recipe of theirs, and is now a favorite of ours too! I have a feeling that this will be on regular rotation around here.

Ingredients in Skillet Sausage and Rice

This is one of those dinners I make when I don’t think I have anything to make. I always seem to have these pantry staples on hand, and I bet you do, too! Here’s what you need:

  • Beef Kielbasa sausage – you can use pork sausage, andouille sausage, any type of sausage you like.
  • Minced garlic – about a teaspoon, or one or two garlic cloves, chopped.
  • Black beans – one can, drained and rinsed. No black beans? No problem! Use kidney beans, pinto beans, Navy beans, white chili beans, etc.
  • Corn – on can, drained. You can also use frozen corn for this recipe, but I actually prefer the canned corn.
  • Rice – two cups, cooked as directed until tender. I like to use a combination of water and chicken broth as liquid to cook the rice, for extra flavor.
  •  Worcestershire sauce – a couple of tablespoons, for an extra rich flavor.
  • Salt and pepper – to taste. No need for more spices. The main source of flavor comes from the Kielbasa sausage, so it just needs a little bit of seasoning and you are good to go.

What is a one-skillet meal?

When you’re looking to speed the cooking and cleaning process, it’s time to consider one skillet meals. As the name suggests, these are any dish you can cook on your stove top in a single skillet. There are so many options. Its similar to the sheet pan cooking idea, but instead of using the oven and heating up the entire house, you can cook these right on the stove. One of our favorite one-skillet meals include the Summer Skillet Pasta with all its fresh, low-fat flavor. You might also enjoy the Santa Fe Chicken and Rice Skillet or the Cheesy Beef and Rice Skillet. Or add some international flair with the Brazilian Rice and Beans with Sausage. Before you know it, you’ll want to make all your meals in a single skillet. And the dish washer in your household will thank you!

Mix Things up a Bit

If you are wanting to add more veggies for even more color and flavor, some great additions could be:

  • Yellow onion
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Zucchini
  • Red bell pepper
  • Fresh parsley
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Tomatoes

How to Store Leftovers

Leftover Skillet Sausage and Rice is so yummy! Perfect for lunches or a second dinner. Store leftovers covered in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Freeze leftovers for up to a month and reheat in the microwave.

Frequently Asked Questions about Skillet Sausage and Rice

Should I use canned corn or frozen corn for this supper?

I’ve made it once with canned corn and once with frozen corn. Both work fine, but I actually preferred the canned corn (drained). The frozen corn, while cooking, ended up a little wet when it thawed, and gave the whole dish a little too much corn flavor.

Do you need oil to cook sausage in a skillet?

Sausage itself releases its own oils during cooking, so you only need a drizzle of olive oil or vegetable oil to brown the sausage in your skillet.

What do you eat with sausage?

Veggies and rice pair perfectly with sausage, which is why this recipe is so yummy! You can also serve asparagus, brussels sprouts or zucchini alongside this dish.
