Ingredients for the Best Pork Roast in a Crockpot

These ingredients are classic and traditional for any slow cooker pork roast recipe! You will love the flavor, aroma, and just how simple it is to make. Take a few minutes to prepare and let the slow cooker do all the work!

  • Pork roast – I used a 3 to 4 pound roast that fit in my slow cooker easily.
  • Oil – Be creative with your oil! Choose from olive oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil.
  • Potatoes – Quarter either red or russet potatoes for your roast. These will go around the sides of the crockpot.
  • Carrots – It is easiest to buy baby carrots and just add them to the crockpot. You can also wash, peel, and cut fresh carrots too!
  • Onion – Cut into chunks or slices to add in with the vegetables.
  • Cream of mushroom soup – Make your cream of mushroom soup homemade or, if you don’t have time, use a store bought can.
  • Onion soup mix – This seasoning is always a classic added to the pork loin roast. It gives a ton of flavor all in one small packet!

Pick the Perfect Pork

When it comes to finding the best pork roast, not all cuts of pork are created equal. For crockpot pork recipes, you want to get that tender, savory, slow-roasted taste, which means you need a cut of meat that has enough fat to bring out all the right flavors.

For a Crockpot pork roast recipe, the best cut of pork is a boneless pork shoulder or pork butt. These cuts are well-marbled with fat, which ensures that the meat remains tender and juicy after slow-cooking. The fat also infuses the pork with flavor and helps to keep it from drying out during the long cooking process. Boneless pork shoulder or pork butt is perfect for shredding and pulling. This makes it ideal for pulled pork sandwiches or serving over rice, potatoes, or with vegetables. Its versatility and ability to withstand extended cooking times make it a popular choice for crock-pot pork roast recipes.

“Love a good crock pot recipe! This is comfort food at its best! Not only is this meal easy to prepare but it is also very delicious!”

Storing Leftovers

To store leftover crock-pot pork roast, first allow it to cool to room temperature. Then transfer it to an airtight container or freezer bag. Refrigerate the pork roast within two hours of cooking and store it in the refrigerator for up to three to four days. For freezing, package the cooled pork roast in freezer-safe containers or resealable bags. Remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. When reheating, thaw the frozen pork roast in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop until it reaches the desired temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions for Classic Pork Roast Dinner

Where does pork roast come from?

Pork rib roast are also called pork center loin roasts or just pork roast. These are usually bone in or boneless. They are known to be fattier than tenderloin or pork shoulder, but still fairly lean. They are juicy and full of flavor!

Do you need liquid in a slow cooker for pork?

Not for this recipe! Because there is a good amount of liquid from the cream of soup and the meat, you do not have to add in extra liquid. Sometimes, extra liquid will make the meat and vegetables more mushy. If you are really wanting to add liquid, I recommend beef or chicken broth.

Do you have to brown a pork roast before putting it in the crockpot?

To get a delicious crust around the pork roast, it is best to sear the pork before adding it to the crockpot. Searing your pork will help lock in juices and give the pork a nice brown color. It takes about 3 to 4 minutes to sear the pork on each side.

What goes good with pork roast?

We always love to have a brown sugar and honey glaze or a chunky applesauce that lays over the pork roast when it is served.

What is pork gravy made of?

Create the best gravy using your pork roast drippings from the crockpot. Whisk together cornstarch and liquid from the slow cooker in a small saucepan on medium-high heat until it begins to boil and thickens in the pan.

Storing Traditional Slow Cooker Pork Roast

If you have leftovers, then this crockpot meal is perfect to warm up again and again throughout the week! Simply place the roast in an airtight container dish to sit in the refrigerator for five to seven days. When ready to reheat, you can place in the microwave or cook in the oven until warm. You can even make pork sandwiches for the next day!

This recipe was a keeper. The simple gravy was wonderful. I thickened it on the stove once the roast was ready. My family loved it.

I probably shouldn’t comment til my roast is done. That being said, I’m at the 4 hour on low point. I’m using a 2.75 lb pork loin. I’m using more onions and carrots than called for, plus added some celery since the roast is slightly smaller than suggested and we LOVE veggies. What I’m finding is that this needs a little liquid. I opened the slow cooker to quickly move the veggies around and found that VERY little liquid has cooked out and the mushroom soup mixture has not loosened up and given off any liquid. Potatoes and carrots that were resting against the side of the crock are dry and stuck to the side. So, I added about 1/2 cup of not water and have the lid locked back down. Will try to update review once it ‘s all done

    1. Try adding a little milk to your soup next time it helps it in making the gravy also and it doesn’t dry up so easily also milk is a good tenderizer both before cooking or during I always add milk just throw pork roast in and pour cream soup and milk over it with the spices added to soup of course and it’s good everytime.

Love a good crock pot recipe! This is comfort food at its best! Not only is this meal easy to prepare but it is also very delicious!

    1. The cream soup is a great way to make your pork tender I use this recipe all the time and it’s good everytime I don’t add my veggies I like to cook them separately for their own flavor

  7. I don’t have a crock pot, but want to try this. Any suggestions for cooking in the oven or over a burner?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes! So, follow the instructions for browning the meat, and then you can either cook it in the oven or on the stove top. For the oven, use a large pot with a lid and bake at 350 for about 3 hours. For the stove top, use a large pot with a lid and cook it on low heat/a simmer for about 3 hours. Hope this helps!

I made this for dinner tonight, and it was honestly the best pork roast I have ever made! I followed the ingredients and directions, plus a can of chicken broth, and minus the whole onion because I forgot to buy it (!!!) but it came out so good, cooked it on low for 5 & 1/2 hours, then turned it up to high for the last hour. We all enjoyed it, thanks for posting your recipe! 😊

This is such an easy and delicious meal, my family loved it! The pork cooked up tender and juicy. This is one I will make again and again!

I love coming home to a yummy dinner from the crock pot! This pork is top of the list, it’s flavorful and juicy and makes great leftovers too!

    1. You definitely can use some stock or broth if you would prefer. Beef broth might taste better than chicken broth but you can use whatever you prefer!

    2. I think your supposed to use a can of mushroom soup and then add the onion soup powder to it, that’s what im going to try

    3. The husband got a bone in pork shoulder 🤦🏼‍♀️ does this work for this recipe?! Should I cook linger or different level or add liquid?! It’s already in the pot, just put it in! HELP!!! Lol

      1. I’m just seeing this, I’m sorry! How did it turn out?? We haven’t tried it with bone-in pork shoulder.

        1. Will a pork loin work with this recipe? I don’t want it to fall apart but rather be able to slice it. Thanks.

          1. I haven’t tried it with a pork loin, so I’m not sure how that would turn out. Let us know how it goes if you try it!

    4. Per the recipe, mix the dry soup mix with the canned soup, then mix with the vegetables to coat them. It is ‘gloppy’ but the juices from the pork roast will make a nice gravy. Be sure the veggies aren’t left on top of the roast or they won’t cook enough.

    5. I’ve got mine in the crock pot now for over 8 hours and there is plenty of liquid in just from the veggies and meat

    1. You can use cream of chicken or cream of celery for a similar taste and texture. Thanks for asking!
