These Philly cheesesteak sandwiches are the perfect dinner to make when you don’t have a lot of time but are craving something hearty, filling, and flavorful. The tender roast beef soaks up flavorful juices and tastes delicious with thinly sliced peppers and onions. Add lots of buttery cheese, pop the whole thing on soft hoagie bread, warm it under the broiler and you have a satisfying, fulfilling sandwich that is warm and tasty.

Whip these sandwiches up and serve them with some veggies and dip, French fries, or potato chips, and you’ve got yourself a meal the whole family will love. Some of my kids don’t like the peppers and onions, so I just pile the extras up on my sandwich. It is the best sandwich for our family! They are also great for parties or game day!

Classic Philly Cheesesteak Recipe Ingredients

Take your favorite Philly cheesesteak recipe to your kitchen with this authentic recipe that never fails. It is so simple to make and using the right ingredients only makes it even better. Get ready to wow your taste buds with these ingredients layered together.

  • Beef broth – Tenderizes the beef and gives it an extra juicy beef experience.
  • Onion soup mix – Adds that extra flavor of onion and seasonings to the meat and vegetables.
  • Black Angus roast beef – I like to get thinly sliced roast beef from the deli counter at my grocery store, but you could use pre-sliced deli meat or even leftover roast beef from Sunday dinner. Just make sure the beef is nice and thin; the flavor of the juice soaks in better that way when you simmer it.
  • Green bell pepper – Cut the peppers up really thin so they cook evenly. You want them tender but not mushy.
  • Onion – A white onion is perfect for taste and smell. These will be sliced into thin slices.
  • Cream cheese – Add a nice, thick layer of cream cheese to the bread. It adds a whole new dimension that I just can’t live without anymore. The cream cheese softens with the hot meat and veggies and melts perfectly.
  • Provolone cheese – This is one of the best cheeses to choose for this cheesesteak recipe.
  • Hoagie rolls – You can find the hoagie rolls at pretty much any grocery store or use our Homemade Subway Bread recipe if you like homemade bread better!
  • Optional Additions: mushrooms, hot peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles

How to Make Easy Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

This is one of the greatest sandwich recipes of all time! It has the perfect cut of beef that is tender and juicy. White American cheese melts flawlessly and adds all the flavor overtop the roast beef giving it the best flavor combination.

  1. Boil – Bring beef broth and onion soup mix to a boil. Add roast beef, reduce heat, and simmer for about 5-10 minutes. In the meantime, in a large skillet saute onion and green pepper over medium heat.
  2. Simmering – When beef is done simmering, drain juices. Add roast beef to the skillet along with about 4 ounces of cream cheese.
  3. Layer – Spread the remaining cream cheese on each hoagie roll. When the cream cheese in the skillet is all melted, generously portion the beef mixture onto each hoagie roll.
  4. Cheese – Top with provolone cheese and place sandwiches, open-faced on a large baking sheet.
  5. Broil – Broil on high for about a minute or until the cheese becomes bubbly and the bread becomes slightly toasty. Remove from oven and serve immediately.

This was delicious! I only used half the cream cheese since that’s what I had. I added jalapeños (I like things spicy!) and my husband added mushrooms. Yum!

My family loved these! My husband isn’t typically a huge cheesesteak fan but he thought they were so good! He said best cheesesteak he’s ever had!! Thanks for the recipe.

We all love cheesesteaks here. I haven’t tried adding cream cheese and would like to give that a try next time I make them.

ABSOLUTELY delicious! Forgot to get onion soup mixture, but improvised an it turned out great. Thank you for your AWESOME recipes.

      1. I bought medium-rare roast from the deli and I used Havarti cheese last time and it was WONDERFUL. People typically use provolone though. Hope this helps!

        1. Also, my boyfriends from where it was created. He thinks that bell peppers are a side, not included. He is passionate about it. Most of those places have it on a condiment/sides bar or you ask to have it added.
