These delicious Grilled Potatoes in Foil are perfect for when you are grilling out on the barbecue. They make the perfect side to any meat you’re grilling. We love them with anything from chicken to burgers, steaks to fish. I love how you can customize each foil pack based on your own personal flavor preferences. Toss all the potatoes with a ranch mixture, then divide the potatoes out onto individual foil pieces and top them the way you want them. Our kids love making their own potatoes and adults love them too. Try these for your next cook out and prepare to be amazed!

Ingredients in Grilled Potatoes in Foil

These versatile grilled potatoes can be flavored up all sorts of ways, depending on your family’s tastes. But here’s what we start with for the basic recipe:

  • Large potatoes – Usually we like good ol’ Idaho russet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into bite sized pieces. You can keep the skins on, or peel them. No russet potatoes? You can use Yukon gold potatoes, red potatoes or any of your other favorites.
  • You’ll need heavy-duty aluminum foil for your foil pack potatoes.

For the Ranch Mix:

  • Mayonnaise – a quarter cup mayo. I like using Hellman’s but use your favorite brand.
  • Sour cream – a quarter cup, either full-fat or reduced fat.
  • Hidden Valley Ranch mix – one packet of dry Ranch seasoning

Toppings:

  • Cheddar cheese – shredded
  • Bacon – crumbled

Cooking Methods for Grilled Potatoes

  • Grilled Potatoes in foil can be cooked a number of ways. If you’re out camping, they make a terrific tin foil dinner. All you have to do is prepare them ahead of time and chill them in a cooler until ready to cook. Then, just throw them in the fire pit. To check the readiness, unfold some of the foil and pierce a potato with a fork to see if it is tender.
  • We make these Grilled Potatoes most often on the gas grill during the summertime, but you can easily cook them in the oven during the winter months. Bake them at 425 degrees for about 30 to 45 minutes, but the time will vary depending on how big your potato pieces are. Again, check for potatoes to be fork tender before taking them out of the oven.
  • Turn these Grilled Potato packs into a full meal by adding raw chicken to the potatoes. Make sure to cut the chicken into bite size pieces so it cooks thoroughly. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs taste scrumptious in this recipe, but any kind of chicken will work just fine. Just make sure the temperature of the chicken is about 165 degrees so you know it’s done.

  • Roasted bell peppers and onions
  • Sauteed mushrooms
  • Mixed vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots
  • Top with Parmesan cheese
  • Garnish with rosemary, fresh parsley, thyme or garlic powder.

Frequently Asked Questions about Grilled Potatoes in Foil

How to cook potatoes before grilling?

To ensure your potatoes cook all the way through on the grill, you can boil them in a pot of salted water for a few minutes or until slightly softened. Then place foil around the potatoes and seasonings and throw them on the grill.

Do you pierce potatoes before baking in foil?

Typically, you want to poke holes in your potato so it doesn’t explode and hit you with burning hot potato insides. Because this recipe has cut up potatoes inside a foil packet, you don’t have to pierce anything, you’re all good! But yes, typically it is best practice to pierce a whole potato before you cook it.

Why do you soak potatoes before grilling?

Soaking your russet potatoes in salted water for a few minutes before grilling will add flavor and help remove some of the starch that can make your potatoes mushy.

    1. I use 6 medium potatoes, or 4 large potatoes to make 4 packets. Thanks for asking! I will add this to the recipe.

  4. First, I’ve tried quite a few of your recipes and really enjoyed them.
That being said, please don’t post recipes without saying how many servings. Very frustrating. In the particular recipe above you don’t even say how many potatoes! You may be experienced cooks but there are those of us who aren’t. Need all the help I can get.
Thank you for hearing out my rant. I will continue to try more of your recipes.

    1. Generally you can bake them at 425 for about 30 to 40 minutes, but the time will vary based on how big your potato pieces are and how many are in your foil packet.
