Please forgive me for stepping away from recipes today. I know we are a “recipe” site and 99.99% of Favorite Family Recipes IS recipes/food related… but every once in a rare while we like to share with our readers something more than recipes. If you are a regular to our site, you know we don’t have a lot of “fluff” in our posts. We typically get straight down to business with our recipes without sharing much about our personal lives. However, today I am going to get a little more personal because this is something that we take seriously and that has affected our family greatly.
Not too many people know this, but we lost our sister unexpectedly while she was sleeping when she was 3 months old. It is a tragedy that has devastated our family and something that we hope none of you will ever have to experience.
Of course, because we know what it is like losing a tiny loved one, our family is extremely paranoid when it comes to our own children sleeping. I find myself waking up all throughout the night checking to see if my babies are breathing. I find it near impossible to get any sleep that first year. Last year, I heard of a company called “Owlet” that was creating an infant monitoring system that monitors your baby’s sleeping and alerts you if they stop breathing.
This company immediately caught my attention and I have been following them to see when their product would be available to the public. Now to be clear, Owlet does not claim to help prevent or reduce the risk of *SIDS but their device is designed to alert you if your baby’s heart rate or oxygen levels drop. Read more about accidental suffocation and SIDS here: http://www.cdc.gov/sids/aboutsuidandsids.htm
Lucky for me, the Owlet baby monitor system was released just 2 days before my newest little one was born. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one! I have been using the Owlet system for almost 2 weeks now and I don’t know how I ever made it without it. I absolutely love it and I am actually getting SLEEP!
4 MONTH UPDATE: I have been using this product now for 4 months. I can’t tell you what a great 4 months of SLEEPING it has been. Thankfully, we have had no “red” alerts and things have been going quite smoothly. A couple times she kicked her sock off and I heard the little tune to let me know it was out of place, but that is about it. It has worked like a charm! I would recommend this a thousand times over to every mom who is wanting a little peace of mind and who is wanting to catch some Zzzz’s.

I had the opportunity of speaking to one of the co-founders the other day and I was so impressed by his passion for changing lives and for this product. It is something that he doesn’t take lightly and that has been in the works for years, making it perfect. They have a medical team that actually works with hospitals, clinics and research institutions to do studies on Owlet and to further infant health.
The team at Owlet explained to me that for decades, suffocation deaths were lumped into the number of SIDS deaths, but in the mid-1990s they started breaking it out between SIDS and suffocation. The team at Owlet has been researching both and believe that with suffocation, specifically, it is known how it happens and they feel that is an issue that can be combated.. and that Owlet can be a big part of that.
It is truly incredible what they have done here and they have already been saving lives.
Here is my little sweetheart wearing her monitor… seriously, how cute is she?!

*Owlet is not claiming to help prevent or reduce the risk of SIDS because SIDS is defined as a sudden death that cannot be explained after a thorough investigation is conducted. We cannot (and do not) claim a solution to something where the cause itself is not understood like SIDS.
