Ingredients to make Sweet Teriyaki Ham Steaks including crushed pineapple, corn starch, ham steaks, brown sugar and teriyaki sauce.

Ingredients in Grilled Ham Steaks

The sweet glaze is tangy and delicious and super easy to make for this ham steak recipe. We like to use the pre cook ham steak option, and since you are grilling them, the glazed ham steaks will be ready to eat in no time. Here’s all you need:

  • Fresh Ham Steaks – The slices of individual ham at the grocery store are generally thinner but you can request a thick slice cut at the butcher.
  • Teriyaki sauce – Always adds in intense flavor of sweet and savory. However, soy sauce will also work too, or a dash of Worcestershire sauce or a drizzle of maple syrup to your sauce.
  • Brown sugar – Add in the sweetness with the teriyaki sauce whenever these two ingredients are together. The brown sugar ham steak recipe is the perfect combination of sweet and savory.
  • Pineapple – Crushed pineapple in a can gives the steaks a little texture, plus lots of flavor from the pineapple juice. You can either drain the pineapple juice or add a little to the mixture.
  • Corn starch – This is the thickener for the sauce.
  • Dijon mustard or apple cider vinegar – Both optional, but does add more flavoring when combined.

Optional Ingredients or Add-ins

You can really use all sorts of seasonings to make this ham steak dinner your own. You can try some of the following spices and add to the teriyaki sauce.

  • Onion powder or garlic powder – to season up the sauce just a bit
  • Cloves – gives the sauce a rich, aromatic element to the meal.
  • Salt and black pepper – to taste
  • Cayenne pepper – adds a little heat to the overall flavor.
  • Brush the steaks with a little olive oil before grilling.
  • Lemon juice – just a teaspoon or so, to drizzle on for extra flavor.
  • Top with a slice of your favorite cheese – Swiss would taste delicious!

Pan-Fried Ham Steaks

If you don’t have access to a gas grill or outdoor grill, another way to cook these steaks is cooking on the stove top in a frying pan or an iron skillet. Melt butter in the pan and place the pre-cooked steaks on medium heat, flipping it after a few minutes on each side. This is a great source of protein! You can also bake them in the oven under the broiler, but they really taste better on the grill or pan seared.

“I’d never made these before but they were fantastic! I just love the flavor of teriyaki and ham together!”

Where to Find Ham Steaks

You can make these with leftovers from a big cooked ham, or purchase actual pre-sliced ham steaks, which is what we did. We got these gigantic ones from Costco, they were Kirkland brand and came with three individually packaged, thick ham steaks. They sell bone-in ham steaks and boneless, so make sure to know what you are getting. Before purchasing, you can look at other locations to get the best price.

Leftover Ham Steaks

Generally having a smaller dinner usually means not too many leftovers. If you do have leftovers, place them in an airtight container and store in the fridge for two to three days. When ready to reheat, place in a large skillet and pan fry the steaks over medium-high heat . It takes 2-3 minutes per side to warm through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ham steaks the same as ham?

Yes, it’s a part of the whole ham. It is a slice of ham from a whole ham roast that is individually packaged and sold in grocery stores. This is a great option for smaller families that don’t want to purchase an entire ham.

Does ham steak need to be cooked?

The nice things about this cut of meat is that it’s already pre-cooked and ready to eat. The packaging will be labeled “fully cooked”. If your ham steak is not pre-cooked, then they are not safe to eat until you cook them.

What goes good with ham steaks?

The best side dishes are green beans, glazed carrots, sweet potatoes, or loaded potatoes. Having a side salad and adding in a dessert is always a great way to make a complete meal.
