Ingredients in Homemade Fajita Seasoning
This simple fajita seasoning is one of the easiest spice blends to make – made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
- Chili Powder – make sure you are using MILD chili powder like what you would use in chili.
- Paprika – use smoked paprika for even more of a smoky taste
- Cumin
- Salt
- Sugar
- Oregano
- Garlic Powder – you can use dried minced garlic as well
- Onion Powder – you can also use dried minced onion
- Cayenne Pepper – add more or less to fit your spice tolerance
Variations
- Chipotle Fajita Seasoning – add chipotle powder to your homemade fajita seasoning mix for an extra layer of sweet and smoky flavor.
- Citrus Twist – add crystalized lemon or lime (we like the True Lemon brand) for a bright, tangy kick. You can also add lemon or lime zest with the lime juice when you marinate your fajita meat.
- Kick Up the Spice – add more cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for even more spice.
How to Use Homemade Fajita Seasoning
To make fajitas: In an airtight container, combine 1 pound of the protein of your choice, ½ cup broth or water, 1 tablespoon homemade fajita seasoning, 2 cloves of garlic, and the juice of half a lime. Let marinate for at least 1 hour. Heat a skillet over medium high heat. Drain marinade from protein and then add the protein to the skillet. Cook until outside is seared or browned. Add 3 bell peppers, sliced, and one red onion, sliced. Pour the remaining fajita seasoning over the veggies. Cook until veggies are soft and protein is cooked through. Serve with flour tortillas and your favorite fajita toppings.
