Why I Love This Savory Pie
I love this recipe because it takes all the cozy flavors of a cheeseburger and turns them into an easy dinner pie. It is warm, cheesy, simple, and filling without needing a grill or a long list of ingredients.
This is the kind of recipe I make on busy weeknights when I need something quick, but still want dinner to feel homemade. The beef and onion cook together in one skillet, the cheese melts right over the top, and the Bisquick mixture forms a light crust as it bakes. It slices up like a pie, but tastes like a cheeseburger.
It is also easy to change up. Add pickles and tomatoes after baking, season the beef like you would your favorite burgers, or double it in a 9×13 pan when you are feeding more people.

Why This Recipe Works
- Quick & Easy: Takes just minutes to prepare and bakes in under 30 minutes.
- Budget-Friendly: Uses simple pantry staples.
- One-Pan Meal: Minimal dishes, maximum flavor!
- Family Approved: It’s a hit with kids and adults alike.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- Ground beef: I like using 85% lean ground beef because it has good flavor without being too greasy.
- Onion: Chopped yellow or white onion cooks with the beef and gives the filling that classic burger flavor.
- Salt and pepper: Simple seasoning is all you need, but you can add more if you like your burgers extra seasoned.
- Cheddar cheese: Shredded cheddar melts over the beef and gives the pie its cheeseburger taste.
- Bisquick or baking mix: This makes the easy crust-like topping without having to make a separate pie crust.
- Milk: Milk thins the Bisquick mixture so it can pour over the beef and bake into the pie.
- Eggs: Eggs help the topping set up and hold everything together when sliced.
Ingredient Additions and Substitutions
- Burger toppings: Add shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mustard, or burger sauce after baking.
- Bacon: Sprinkle cooked crumbled bacon over the beef or on top before serving.
- Cheese: Cheddar is classic, but Monterey Jack, Swiss, pepper jack, or Colby Jack all work.
- Ground turkey or chicken: Use either one in place of ground beef for a lighter version.
- Extra seasoning: Garlic powder, Lawry’s seasoning salt, onion powder, or a little Worcestershire sauce are all great in the beef.
- Onion soup mix: Stir a little into the Bisquick mixture or beef for more savory flavor.
- Taco Cheeseburger Pie: Add taco seasoning to the beef, then serve with sour cream, salsa, avocado, and shredded lettuce.
- Veggies: Mushrooms, shredded zucchini, carrots, or bell peppers can be cooked with the beef.
- Gluten-free option: Use a gluten-free baking mix in place of Bisquick.
- Bisquick substitute: Krusteaz baking mix works well, or you can use a homemade baking mix if that is what you have.
How to Make Cheeseburger Pie

- Cook the beef and onion. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a skillet, cook the ground beef and onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft.

- Season and add to the pie plate. Season with salt and pepper, then drain off extra grease. Spray a 9-inch pie plate with cooking spray. Spread the beef mixture evenly in the bottom of the dish.

- Top with cheese. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef mixture.

- Mix the topping. In a medium bowl, whisk together the Bisquick, milk, and eggs until combined. The mixture will be thin, and that is exactly how it should be.

- Pour and bake. Pour the Bisquick mixture evenly over the beef and cheese. Bake for about 25 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

- Rest before slicing. Let the pie cool for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting. This helps it set up so the slices hold together better.
Recipe Tips
- Drain the beef well: This keeps the pie from turning greasy or soggy.
- Do not overmix the batter: Whisk the Bisquick, milk, and eggs just until combined.
- Let it rest before cutting: Waiting 10 to 15 minutes makes a big difference for clean slices.
- Use a glass pie plate if you have one: It bakes evenly and makes it easy to see the edges.
- Double it for a 9×13 pan: A doubled recipe works well in a 9×13 baking dish. It may need a few extra minutes, so start checking around 30 to 35 minutes.
- Season the beef like a burger: A little garlic powder, seasoning salt, or Worcestershire sauce can add great flavor.
- Add toppings after baking: Fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles are best added right before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Double the recipe and bake it in a greased 9×13 baking dish. Start checking it around 30 to 35 minutes. It is done when a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
I would stick with doubling it. Tripling can make the pie too thick and it may not bake as evenly.
You can use another baking mix like Krusteaz, or use a homemade baking mix.
Yes, just substitute the Bisquik for a gluten free mix. I like the gluten-free Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix.
Yes! You can substitute the eggs with a flax egg or a little extra milk, though the texture may be slightly different.
The most common reason is not draining the beef well enough. Make sure to remove the extra grease before adding the beef to the pie plate. Also measure the milk carefully so the topping sets correctly.
Absolutely! Popular toppings include shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, pickles, mustard, and even crispy bacon for a true cheeseburger experience.
Cheddar is my favorite because it gives the pie a classic cheeseburger flavor. Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, Swiss, or pepper jack are also good choices.
Yes. Ground turkey or ground chicken both work. I would season them a little more since they are milder than beef.

Make Ahead and Storage
- Make ahead: You can prep the beef mixture up to a day ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. When you are ready to bake, add it to the pie plate, top with cheese, whisk the Bisquick mixture, pour it over the top, and bake.
- Leftovers: Store leftover Cheeseburger Pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Reheating: Reheat slices in the microwave for a quick lunch, or warm them in the oven at 350 degrees until heated through.
- Freezing: Bake the pie first, let it cool completely, then wrap it well and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the oven at 350 degrees.
Pairing Ideas
Cheeseburger Pie is hearty enough to stand on its own, but I like serving it with classic burger sides. Air Fryer French Fries, Oven Roasted Green Beans, Homemade Dinner Rolls, Caprese Salad, Peas, or Corn all go well with it. For the full cheeseburger feel, serve it with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, fry sauce, ketchup, and mustard on the side.

This is a great recipe. Tonight I decided to double it and cook in a 9×13 glass dish. I overcooked it a bit! 45 minutes at 400 was too long but we’ll still eat it. Next time I’ll cook it at 375 for 40 minutes and check it.
My family loves this ! I can’t wait to make it again.
This is everything my family wants in a dinner and more! So much easier than firing up the grill. Love it for a quick weeknight fix! Thank you!
What if you dont want to use a pie. plate and you want to make a bigger batch if you want to use a 9×13.would you double or triple it. Thank You
If you are using a 9×13 I would just double the recipe. You could probably get away with tripling it but it would be quite thick. Hope this helps!
Let me start off by saying I love your website!! I made your crock pot pork chops Tuesday night and the Cheeseburger pie Wednesday night! My husband asked me to make the taco pie as well because he loved it! I did season the ground beef with garlic powder and Lawry’s seasoning salt and pepper much like I would home made burgers and it was excellent. In fact, we packed the left overs for lunch today 🙂 Thank you so much.
I’m intrigued. Never thought of this kind of meal. Might have to try it just to see what it’s like. Thanks! 🙂
I tried this recipe because it sounded so easy and it was delicious! My three picky eaters gobbled it up with NO complaints! That never happens! Thank you!
