Our recipe for Harry Potter Butterbeer tastes just like what they sell at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. A no-cook method that is SO easy!

Two glass mugs of Butterbeer

Harry Potter Butterbeer

We took a trip to Universal Studios and we fell in LOVE with this tasty drink. I knew I had to recreate it once I got home. It turns out it is so easy to make! I will definitely be whipping up a batch for my next Harry Potter movie marathon. You can make this recipe two ways. If you are going for super authentic, you can add caramel and butter extracts to the cream soda. This really adds that extra butter-y flavor and makes it taste exactly like the real thing.

Ingredients in Butterbeer

Ingredients in Harry Potter's butterbeer including cream soda, butterscotch topping, and extracts.

If you are looking for a more simple recipe, you can just use plain cream soda. It still tastes SUPER yummy and you don’t have to spend the extra money on extracts only to put them in your pantry and never use them again. I think it tastes awesome both ways!

Where can I find Butterbeer at Universal Studios?

Butterbeer can easily be found inside of Universal Studios. As you enter The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, there is a bright red Butterbeer cart where you can purchase Butterbeer and Frozen Butterbeer. Butterbeer is also on the menu at The Three Broomsticks, of course!

More foods we LOVED at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and where to find them:

The Ribs Platter – The Three Broomsticks: We loved these ribs! The glaze was so yummy and I like that it is served with corn on the cob. Even though we were in Hogsmeade, I felt like this was a meal worthy of the Great Hall at Hogwarts!

Fish and Chips – The Three Broomsticks: These fish and chips were SO good! Sometimes I feel like fish and chips is all chip and no fish, but that was not the case here. Plus, the tartar sauce was so yummy that I dipped all my chips in it too!

Shepherd’s Pie – The Three Broomsticks: This Shepherd’s Pie was the perfect comfort food. I felt like I was in Molly Weasley’s kitchen eating a real home-cooked meal. I loved how they swirl the mashed potatoes on top!

Every Flavored Beans, Chocolate Frogs, and MORE – Honeydukes: Honeydukes was definitely my favorite shop. It was just like I imagined it when I read the books! Every nook and cranny was lined with goodies. We bought LOTS of souvenirs here. Our favorites were the Every Flavor Beans (they MEAN every flavor) and the Chocolate Frogs (they come with a cool collectors card, just like in the books). Here are a few shots from the store:

  1. Hello! I can’t get the butter extract but my store has X-tra Touch artificial butter flavoring. Not ideal, but I don’t want to lose the buttery taste – any idea if this would work ?

    1. I haven’t seen that brand before, so I am not 100% sure, but it sounds like it would work! I would try it in a small amount first and taste test it.

  2. 4 stars
So this works pretty well for the cold version, but we wanted the hot one and I think we will have to keep experimenting to get the hot recipe – that’s my absolute favourite version of butterbeer. Thank you for this though, I appreciate the work you did for this 🤍

  3. It it better to use real butter extract (like McCormick), or imitation butter extract? Or if it doesn’t matter too much?

  4. Hello, I was just wondering if there’s a way to make it hot, like in the books. Thanks, this looks like a great recipe!

  5. If I don’t have butter extract, can I use actual butter? And if so, how much should butter would equal 1/4 tsp extract?

    1. They make them a little differently at Harry Potter World so we wanted recipes that reflected that.

  6. Did you use the jar of butterscotch or the syrup in the squeeze bottle. Washington seems to hate butterscotch.

  7. 5 stars
perfect recipe, my friends tried it. I thought it was perfectly delineated in the recipe, but I just didn’t like it. I love Rum but I would never get a “hot buttered rum”. I’m juat not that interested in butter flavoured things. My friends thought it was brilliant though.

    Thanks for this recipe.

  8. 5 stars
My hatband and I just went to Universal and could not get how great the butterbeer was. This recipe tasted exactly like it! I took another comment suggestion and added 5 drops of the caramel and butter extract to a single can of cream soda since I didn’t want to make a huge batch. I then made half of the amount of topping which left me with some leftovers.

  9. 5 stars
This turned out AMAZING! I didn’t want the topping too sweet so I eliminated the sugar and I couldn’t find butter extract so I replaced that with a little bit of the butter scotch and some butter flavoured table syrup I found. It tasted so damn good!

  10. I have a question about the whipped topping. when you add the powdered sugar and caramel topping, are you whipping it? or folding it in? cant wait to try this for my grands…my Gdaughter is going to Halloween as Hermoine Granger!!!!

  11. What is the best brand of cream soda to use? I’ve noticed there is a big flavor difference between brands especially in New York .

  12. Any suggestions if i cant get the watkin’s brand quick enough? I dragged my feet and now can’t get it here in time.

  13. hey I am wanting to use this recipe but I was wondering what the closest swap would be for the caramel extract. could I use caramel syrup instead. like torani syrup?

    1. Torani is mild and sweet. Extract is concentrated flavor and no sweetness. I would use the syrup myself as a sub.

  14. What is the best brand of cream soda to use? I’ve noticed there is a big flavor difference between brands especially in the USA.

  15. Your recipe says a 2-liter of crème soda but your affiliate link is for 4 (12?)oz bottles. Is the proportion you mention of the two extracts the proper amount for 48oz or for 2 liters?

    1. The recipe is for 2 liters of cream soda. Sometimes the Amazon products change depending on what is in stock.

  16. Any recommendations for the butterscotch topping? Are talking more like coffee syrup or sundae topping? Movie marathon and a mock Great Hall feast for Halloween this year. Want to make sure to get this one right!

  17. I´m in the party comittee for this years christmas party at my work and we have planned a Harry Potter theme. It would be so funny to start with a butterbeer and I think your recipe is the right one to try.
I live in Denmark so it’s difficult to find cream soda in a shop, but luckily it’s possible to buy it online. I’ve read that you prefer the cream soda from A&W.
It seems to me that A&W is a little lighter in colour, than the one from Dr.Pepper, which make the A&W more equal to the “real” one I tasted in Leavesden Studios in London
As it is a little easier to find Dr.Pepper online, I would like to hear if you have any experience with that one? E.g, does the darker colour make a noticeable difference of the final result (colour or taste)?
I will prefer to mix the cream soda with caramel and butter extract at home, but I’m afraid that it’ll goes flat if I mix it to early.
How early in advance do you think I can mix it and still be sure that it is carbonated, when serving?

    1. Hi! A Harry Potter themed Christmas party sounds so fun! For the cream soda, are you referring to the Dr Pepper & Cream Soda drink? Or is there a Dr Pepper brand cream soda? I haven’t seen that in the US so I wasn’t sure. As far as the timing, the carbonation will flatten pretty quickly, so I would actually wait as long as possible to pour and mix it.

      1. I´m referring to the Dr.Pepper & Cream Soda drink. Have you tried that one?
To be sure it won’t flatten I think I’ll just wait mixing it on my work. But I guess it’s not a problem to mix the cream topping in advance?

        1. Dr. Pepper itself has a very distinctive flavor that would certainly effect the taste and color the final product, even with the mixture of cream soda in it.

        2. I have tried that drink and it is delicious, but I am not sure how well it would work for this particular recipe. Let us know how it goes if you try it that way! And yes, you can make the cream topping beforehand!

I was just in Universal a couple weeks ago and tried the actual butterbeer. My only regret at the time was we got rained out later in the day so I couldn’t get a second glass. So I took to the internet to figure out how to make it at home.

This recipe is very good. Probably 90% similar to the universal version. Maybe the other 10% is just actually being in Universal. That being said, highly recommend trying this if you want to get as close to the actual taste of real butterbeer as possible.

The only changes I made: I added a big dollop of marshmallow fluff to the whipped cream and reduced the amount of butterscotch topping by maybe 1/3rd. I think it would have been a bit too much butterscotch flavor otherwise, and my result tasted identical to the Universal version. The only issue I had was that the whipped cream was slightly too thick, which was the case prior to adding the fluff. I’ll try mixing in some cream without whipping it to thin it out a little. But once it mixes with the soda a little, it thins out as well. Not a huge deal either way.

  19. 2 stars
The whip cream was amazing! But the cream soda tasted like medicine 🥴 not as expected. Maybe it’s like the one in the amusement park but in the books it seems more buttery and warm, like eggnog. Oh well!

  20. IF YOU MEAN THE KID FRIENDLY BUTTER BEER THEN YES !!!!!!!!!!!I HAVENT TRIED IT YET BUT I AM GONNA HAVE IT FOR MY B DAY( I HAD A HARRY POTTER THEMED PARTY LAST YEAR AND I AM GONNA HAVE THE SAME THING THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM 8 YEARS OLD

    1. Happy Birthday Carrie! I hope you have a fabulous party with lots of delicious Butterbeer!

  21. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! I took half of the cream soda and froze in an ice tray and then added the rest when I put the cubes into my blender!!! AMMMMAZING!!!! We were lucky enough to have tried Butterbeer at Universal while traveling for work and I was hooked!! So thankful I found this recipe!!

    1. I did the conversion for those that don’t want to make 2 liters of it all at once. If you just want to do an individual can of cream soda, just add 5 drops of each (butter and carmel extract). I will usually split a can with my daughter. I still do the normal recipe for the whipped topping. It stores great in the fridge for a few days and goes great on top of waffles.

    1. It is sometimes hard to find. I’ve found it on Amazon before, but I think it’s seasonal at many grocery stores. You can substitute butterscotch extract or double the butter extract. Thanks for asking!

  22. 5 stars
So great to find this recipe – I’m in the UK and took my kids to HP studios recently only to be completely appalled at the cost of the butterbeer there (£7.99 per serving and the plastic container was compulsory!). Being able to make it at home using this recipe for my longstanding HP fans is a real treat.

  23. 5 stars
Butterscotch topping is not really available around me, but subbing a box of butterscotch pudding for the powdered sugar and syrup worked nicely

    1. What size box? And just use the entire thing in place of the powdered sugar and butterscotch topping? Thanks!

      1. Both L.A, California and Orlando Florida have Universal theme parks. Having been both to them, I’d recommend the one in Orlando. It’s much bigger and there are lots of different rides compared to the one in LA. I hope this comment isn’t too late though. Enjoy

  24. I’d like to make this for my son’s 11th Harry Potter themed birthday. I cannot find Watkins butter extract or caramel extract locally and online deliver time will be past his birthday. What can I try to substitute for both? Thanks!

    1. Those two things really make up the flavor of the butterbeer, but if you are in a pinch, you can use vanilla extract instead. It won’t taste exactly the same, but still yummy!

      1. 5 stars
Thanks! I was able to get both extracts delivered in time for his birthday. The butterbeer was a big hit with our family celebrating my son’s 11th birthday on the same day as Harry Potter’s!

  25. For 2 summers I worked at Storyland in Glen NH. While there I was the fudge maker. After doing some research, of various flavors of homemade Butterbeer fudge, I came up with our own version. It sold very well. However I had to explain to a few parents that Butterbeer fudge had no alcohol in it!

    1. If you wanted to half the recipe it would be 1/8 teaspoon of each extract. Hope this helps!

  26. 5 stars
I just started reading the Harry Potter series to my three sons at bed. We just finished the first book and to celebrate we watched the first movie on our families Saturday night movie night, as a treat I made them butter beer to enjoy as well! It was a huge hit! Thank you so much for this recipe.

  27. Can u pls advise the brand of cream soda that you used ? I am going to try this recipe just confused with so many brands of cream sodas out there which one would you recommend? Thanks

    1. Ingredients
      1 liters cream soda chilled
      1/8 tsp caramel extract
      1/8 tsp butter extract
      For the Cream Topping:
      1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
      1/4 cup butterscotch topping
      1/8 cup powdered sugar

  28. Hi! I’m so exited to make this for my daughter’s birthday today! Unfortunately, I only discovered the recipe last night! I have all the ingredients but my regular grocery store didn’t have any butter extract. I’ve googled it and I’m not sure I’m going to be able to find it locally. I’ll try Bulk Barn, Michael’s, Real Canadian Superstore and WalMart, but in the event it can’t be found, what could I use to replace it?
    Thank you so much!!!!

For those in Canada and not sure where to get a Vanilla Cream Soda, Presidents Choice has a Vanilla Cream Soda that is very good. Safeway carries it. It has no colour, it’s clear. You can probably add food colour to change it. I know Barqs has a cream soda, though I haven’t tried it yet. I know Stewarts has a Vanilla cream soda but it only comes in 355ml bottles.

  30. I like Kathy for what she said. That is exactly how you say my name. That is exactly how you spell my name.. Kathy’s receipt must be great to eat. I bet my daughter would like it too.

MASSIVE hit at my son’s 10th birthday party. I made a double batch in a punch bowl, and it was nearly empty 2 hours later. Both the kids and adults (myself included) loved it.

I also doubled up the whipped cream and put the leftovers in the freezer … I’ve used it in other recipes because the butterscotch whipped cream is *amazing*!

  32. 5 stars
I am very excited to try this!
Just a note on the Soda, I’ve lived all over Australia, and noticed that there appear to be four (that I’ve seen) colours of creaming soda. Yellow, Dark Brown, Pink, Red. It depends on the state I was in as to what brands of soda were available. And let me tell you, there were more than 4 flavours! So, I think I just might make my own syrup and use my trusty under used soda stream for the fizzy bit!
Thanks for the link to a great soda recipe above, along with this wonderful Butterbeer Recipe!

My daughter’s last week home before college and she wanted to watch every Harry Potter movie again and have butter beer. This recipe was absolutely everything we thought it should be. I think we will make it a Christmas treat this year! Thanks so much for posting.

    1. How fun! What a fun way to send your daughter off to college. Thanks so much for taking the time to come back and leave such a nice comment! We are so glad you and your daughter loved the Butterbeer!

  34. 5 stars
    Uhh-mazing!!!!!
I tried this recipe and I wasn’t sure how closely it ll taste to the one we get in the universal studios ! But this is exactly the same! Loved it!
    Thank you so much!
I couldn’t find caramel extract to had to sub it with Starbucks caramel syrup!

    1. Oh yum! I love the idea of using the Starbucks caramel syrup! That is a great substitution. So glad you liked it! 🙂 Thanks for the 5-stars!

        1. To substitute the extract I would suggest a caramel flavoring syrup like Torani or Starbucks brand. That will give you a better consistency! I hope this helps!

  35. Hey I’m on my way to target to try and get the ingredients I’m super excited to try this recipe. I have wanted to try the butter beer since I first seen it on the Harry Potter series I’ll be sure to let you know how it turns out thanks so much for the how to list !!!

  36. I’m planning to make this for my daughter’s birthday party. The topping looks so lovely and foamy in your picture – but I’m wondering how far in advance can I make the topping, so I’m not making it after the kids are all here?

    1. You will want to make the topping as close to serving as possible. You could probably whip it up an hour or so ahead of time but I definitely wouldn’t risk doing it a day ahead. I have heard that you can whip it to soft-peak stage in advance and then whip it one final time right before serving but I have never actually tried that so I can’t say for sure. I hope this helps!

  37. Unfortunately Cream Soda in my country is bright pink and very sickly sweet but I did try it and it was an epic fail. Where’s my wand when I need it. Not your ladies fault. think I will try Ginger Ale or some other type of soft drink.

    1. That’s definitely interesting– pink cream soda :/ yikes. You definitely want the butterscotch colored soda. I don’t know if I can recommend a close substitution for this. Root beer might be an ok alternative? I haven’t tied it so I can’t say for sure though.

Just made this and I am so thrilled! Finally Butterbeer that tastes like what I had in Orlando! Great recipe! That k you so much for sharing!

      1. 5 stars
I LOVE IT. I followed the directions and made my butterbeer today. It was delicious and turned out perfectly! I’m going to have a mini Harry Potter themed party for my birthday and I’m gonna make some more of these. Thank you! You won’t find a better or easier butterbeer recipe online!

  38. 5 stars
Omg this is amazing, I can’t wait to try it! I was wondering if you’re planning on doing a hot butterbeer recipe? It was my favourite when I went to the wizarding world and I’m trying so hard to find a recipe close to it.

    1. It shouldn’t cost more than $10– and that is with the flavor extract. You can find cream soda and the other ingredients for very cheap. Hope this helps!

  39. I know that this question may seem a bit weird to ask but it the cream soda vanilla flavoured? Here in Australia we only really have raspberry cream soda:)

    1. Not a weird question at all! Yes, cream soda in the U.S. is typically vanilla flavored. Raspberry cream soda would definitely not taste the same. Here is a great wiki article on how to make it if you can’t find cream soda near you, click HERE Hope this helps!

    1. Butterscotch topping is a popular ice cream topping. Usually right next to the caramel and fudge toppings. You should be able to find it in most grocery stores. Hope this helps!

  40. I can’t get caramel extract in time (didn’t realize the local stores wouldn’t have it on the shelf). What can I use to replace it? Tried looking online for options, but couldn’t find any. Do you think caramel syrup would work? I feel like I’d have to use a lot to get the flavor to amount to the extract. I’m making this tomorrow… eek!! Thanks in advance.

    1. Yes, you could totally just use a little caramel topping– it just might make it a little sweeter. Hope this helps!

  41. 5 stars
The Butterbeer recipe was great! I drank so much and thought I was going to “bust a gut” but it was worth it! I’m using your Butterbeer recipe for my Harry Potter birthday party. Thanks

    1. Fun!!! Harry Potter birthday parties are the best!!! So glad we were able to help you find the right Butterbeer recipe for your party, we are honored 🙂

    2. I had thought about making butterbeer but never did. Until i found this recipe. It’s delicious. I am thinking about making it a Friday night tradition.

  42. Have you tried Butterscotch Root Beer? I found it at Cracker Barrel. Wondering if toasts the same.

    1. No I haven’t tried that before but it sounds delicious! We will have to try it sometime and see if it tastes like Butterbeer!

  43. 5 stars
I’ve personally never had butterbeer until I tried this recipe, but my boyfriend said it tastes exactly like the one they make at Hogsmeade. It’s too delicious!!! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for the 5-stars and for leaving such a nice comment! We think it tastes like the Hogsmeade kind too– and it’s costs WAY less!

      1. I haven’t seen anyone in the comments ask about this, so is this recipe for a carbonated version of Butterbeer? Or do you wait until the cream soda goes flat before using it/serving it?

    1. We haven’t, it may make the taste a little off. If you try it, let us know how it turns out for you!

  44. This may be a silly question, but when you say “Add butterscotch topping and powdered sugar”, you mix that in to the whipping cream, correct?

    1. Yes, that is right. You want to put that in the whipped cream mixture 🙂 Hope this helps!

  45. 5 stars
I used a lesser strength imitation extract like Watkins, so I had to double the extracts. Tastes great!

    1. I’m sorry for the confusion – it is one 2-liter bottle of cream soda. There are 67.6 ounces in a 2-liter bottle, so that is just a little over 8 cups of cream soda (8 cups is 64 ounces). I hope this helps! Thanks for asking!

    1. We actually don’t have a video of this one yet. We should definitely get working on one! Thanks for the suggestion!

  46. 5 stars
This recipe is delicious but mine wasn’t the right color, it was a clear color, same as regular cream soda. Did you add food colouring to yours?
    Thanks!

    1. hmmm no we didn’t add any food coloring. I wonder if the brand of cream soda makes a difference?

        1. I think we used A&W for this recipe the first time but I have used generic brands since and they still seemed to turn out just fine!

  47. Hello. Is this correct? Only 1/4 tsp caramel extract and 1/4 tsp butter extract for the entire 2 liters of cream soda? It seems like such a small amount compared to the other recipes that I have seen.

    1. The butter extract, especially, goes a long way. We made a batch adding more and it tastes way too buttery. We found these amounts to be about right but you may adjust them to your liking if you would like!

    2. 5 stars
Flavored extracts add very powerful tastes which is why you put a little like food dye. The color gets added quickly after two drops of food dye.

      1. I haven’t read all the comments, so IDK If this has been covered but Canadian cream soda is not the same as US cream soda. I think you may want to edit the recipe to point this out (especially because yours was the top Google hit for Butterbeer recipe).
Canadian Cream soda tastes like cotton candy and is bright pink. US Cream soda is brown-ish and tastes like vanilla.
You can imagine how my experiment with “regular” cream soda went 😒 Off to find some US style cream soda tomorrow

        1. Oh yikes, yes you definitely want to use the U.S. version of cream soda. We haven’t tried Canadian cream soda before and didn’t know that it was any different from the cream soda in the US. Thanks for the head’s up!

          1. There’s actually variations of Cream soda in Canada and we do have the exact same Cream Soda. I guess they haven’t actually looked everywhere. I’ve used clear cream soda but I have seen the brown cream soda as well. I know A&W sell it.
I am confused a bit though with the 2 litres vs 1/4 tsp. Is it 2 litres of soda with only a 1/4 tsp of the extracts?

        1. My topping got really “soupy” once i added the topping (had to use carmel sauce bc i couldn’t find butterscotch) – any suggestions?

          1. The caramel sauce might have a different consistency than the butterscotch we used. Other than that I would say make sure you whip the whipping cream until it forms very stiff peaks. If the cream is stiffer, it might not turn out as soupy. I hope this helps!
