The Viral Tik Tok Sandwich

It’s hard to pin down where a viral recipe originates, but I believe this idea came from NinjaCue on TikTok. I saw this recipe myself and had to try it, but, of course, with a few minor adjustments of my own. By chopping up all the ingredients, you have the best texture and a uniform flavor. It’s super easy to chop, mix, and scoop the ingredients onto your bread, making the best sandwich. I love how you can mix it up and make this a sandwich, sliders, a wrap, or even just a meaty chopped salad without any bread at all.

Ingredients to make Chopped Italian Sandwich including lettuce, mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone, banana peppers, red onion, pickles and hoagie rolls.

Tips and Suggestions

Avoid a soggy sandwich – Use a crustier bread to keep your sandwich crisper. Try a baguette, or you could toast your hoagie.

Pre-chopping the onions and lettuce – Pre-chopping these aren’t necessary if you like bigger onion dices, but I like my lettuce and onions finely diced for this recipe so I chop them first.

Adding other ingredients – Try adding more fresh ingredients like tomato, cucumber, or olives. Other meats to add, you could try turkey, pastrami, and bacon. You can also swap out the mayo mixture for your favorite salad dressing. A simple creamy Italian dressing would be great or even ranch dressing!

A Tip for Adding Tomatoes – Adding tomatoes may make your sandwich soggy. Grape or cherry tomatoes are a better option. It’s a good idea if you are adding tomato to chop them separately and carefully so they don’t get smashed up with the other ingredients.

Hot Italian Sandwich – To make a hot sandwich, chop the meats and cheese and heat in a frying pan all together until the cheese is melted. Scoop into rolls and add more cheese over the top. Heat in the oven at 400-degrees F for about 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted. Remove from the oven and add the veggies on the top. I am telling you, this is SO GOOD.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 ounce pepperoni (about 6 slices)
  • 1 ounce salami (about 6 slices)
  • 4 ounces sliced ham (4-8 slices depending on thickness)
  • 4-6 slices provolone cheese
  • 1/4 cup sliced banana peppers
  • 1/4 cup sliced pickles
  • ¼ cup chopped red onion
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Submarine dressing (I like using the "Beano" brand, see suggestions below for substitutions)
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • Italian seasoning (to taste)
  • salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub sandwich rolls

Instructions

  • Spread chopped lettuce evenly over a cutting board.
Note: I like to pre-chop my onion into fine dices to begin with because I like them extra tiny, but you can keep the onion in slices if you prefer and just chop them with everything else later.
Cutting board with sliced lettuce and diced red onion with a knife.
  • Lay meats evenly over the top of the bed of lettuce and onion.

  • Start to chop everything into small pieces by running a knife through all the ingredients vertically and then turning the cutting board and chopping again through the ingredients cross-wise. Keep chopping until you reach the size of dices you prefer.

Notes

Substitute Submarine Dressing:
If you can’t find the Beano Submarine Dressing you can easily make your own by whisking together 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, ¼ teaspoon dijon mustard, ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning and a pinch of sugar. This should make the perfect amount to add to your sandwich.
