What is a Dagwood Sandwich

If you’ve never had a Dagwood sandwich before, you are in for a huge treat. And I’m not kidding when I say HUGE. Inspired by the comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead (who had a knack for building outrageous sandwiches), this beast is as fun to make as it is to eat. I love making Dagwood sandwiches because there are no rules—just layer after delicious layer of meats, cheeses, pickles, veggies, spreads, and all the fixings your sandwich-loving heart could ever dream of.

Dagwood Sandwich Ingredients

Bread – use a good bread but not one that is too thick or dense. A simple, soft wheat or white bread works great.

Meat – Use a variety of sliced deli meats, I used ham, turkey, pastrami, pepperoni, and bacon but you can also use roast beef, chicken, salami, or any cold cuts of your choice

Cheese – For this sandwich I used cheddar, provolone, and Colby Jack but you can also use Swiss, Havarti, or any other kind of sliced cheese.

Veggies – I layered lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced cucumber, and sliced pickle. You can also include avocado, banana peppers, or any other vegetables that you love. Avoid crunchy veggies like celery or carrot, it ruins the feel of the sandwich.

Condiments – List the condiments we used and also add some alternatives, don’t forget the classic olive on top!

How to Make a Dagwood Sandwich

This is the fun part. Stack and layer any way you want! For this particular sandwich…

  1. Start by lightly toasting the bread, it will hold up better this way.
  2. Spread mayo on one side of the bread and follow with two slices of any cheese and meats.
  3. Add vegetable slices, then place a slice of bread to the top and continue following the same pattern with cheese, meat and vegetables.
  4. Spread mayo onto the final slice of bread for the top and place mayo side down. Use a long toothpick to keep it all together, and place an olive on the very top.

Tips for Making (and Eating) a Dagwood Sandwich

You can leave the bread un-toasted if you prefer, it just won’t hold up as well.

This sandwich is definitely large enough to share with several other people. Cut it into halves or fourths, putting a toothpick in each section.

It’s ok to take the sections apart to eat. I have never seen anyone be able to take a full bite of this giant sandwich as-as, but it’s hilarious to see them try.
