Make Your Own Dunkaroos At Home!
My kids love this Dunkaroo Dip! It’s literally the best lunch box treat and way cheaper than buying boxes of actual Dunkaroos (and tastes better too). I like to portion it into little reusable containers and put it in their lunch boxes, they always get so excited when they find out this is their lunch treat. It is creamy, sweet, and has that fun cake batter flavor without actually using cake mix. I’ve seen a lot of Dunkaroo Dip recipes that use Funfetti cake mix, but every time I’ve tried it, the texture has been grainy and my kids found it kind of off-putting. Using cake batter extract gives you the same flavor but keeps the dip smooth and creamy. I also like using confetti sprinkles because they make it look and feel even more like the Dunkaroo frosting we all remember. Give it a try! Your kids are going to love it!

Dunkaroo Dip Ingredients

- Butter – I like to use regular salted butter for this recipe because it helps balance out all the powdered sugar. If you use unsalted butter, I would add a small pinch of salt. Make sure the butter is softened so it whips up nice and smooth.
- Powdered sugar – Regular powdered sugar works great. If yours is lumpy, sift it first. I usually just add it slowly and let the mixer do the work.
- Heavy cream – Start with the amount in the recipe, then add a little more if you want the dip softer and easier to scoop. If you don’t have heavy cream, you can also just use milk. Just add it sparingly.
- Cake batter extract – This is what gives the dip that classic Dunkaroo/cake batter flavor. I like using a clear cake batter extract so the dip stays bright white instead of taking on a yellow or brown tint.
- Vanilla extract – Clear vanilla is my preference here for the same reason. It keeps the dip looking nice and bright. Regular vanilla works just fine if that’s what you have.
- Rainbow sprinkles – Use jimmies or confetti-style sprinkles rather than nonpareils. Nonpareils tend to bleed their color into the dip and can make it look muddy. Confetti sprinkles hold their color much better and give you more of that classic Dunkaroo look.
- Cool Whip, optional – If you want a lighter, fluffier dip or need it to go a little further for a party, fold in one 8-ounce container of whipped topping or 2 cups of prepared whipped cream. Add it after the dip is completely mixed, then fold in the sprinkles last.
How to Make Dunkaroo Dip

- Beat the softened butter with a stand mixer or hand mixer for 2-3 minutes, or until it is light and fluffy.

- Turn the mixer to low and slowly mix in the powdered sugar. Stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

- Add the cake batter extract, vanilla, and heavy cream, then beat on high for another 2-3 minutes. If the dip seems too thick, add a little more cream until it reaches the consistency you like.

- Gently stir or fold in the rainbow sprinkles. For a lighter, fluffier dip, you can also fold in 2 cups of whipped cream or an 8-ounce container of whipped topping (Cool Whip) before adding the sprinkles.
What to Dip in Dunkaroo Dip
Teddy Grahams are probably the closest, easy option to actual Dunkaroos. My very favorite Teddy Graham flavor to dip is the “birthday cake” flavor but I feel like those are harder to find nowadays. I usually just get the honey flavor because they are easy to find, nice and small, and the honey flavor isn’t overpowering. I don’t love the cinnamon ones because I feel like the cinnamon flavor is too strong and takes away from flavor of the dip. Animal crackers are another great choice and give you that same fun, nostalgic feel. Mini graham crackers, graham cracker sticks, mini Nilla wafers, and small sugar cookies also work really well. If you want a couple non-cookie options, pretzels and strawberries are both taste great.
Expert Tips
Add Cool Whip (Optional): If you are serving this at a kids party, as part of a larger spread, or if you just want it to go further, you can fold in some Cool Whip at the end. My kids prefer if without Cool Whip in their lunch boxes so I don’t add it often. Totally up to you depending on what you are going for.
Don’t serve it too cold. Straight-from-the-fridge dip will be much firmer than Dunkaroo frosting. I think it tastes and dips best when it has had a little time to soften, which is why it is great for lunch boxes! By the time lunch is served, the frosting will have had some time to soften for dipping.
Save some sprinkles for the top. Instead of mixing every last sprinkle into the dip, sprinkle a few over the top right before serving. It makes it look more like the original Dunkaroos frosting and is fun for lunch boxes!
Use reusable containers. I found these cute containers on Amazon that have 3 little compartments and are the perfect size for lunch boxes. I like putting the dip in the middle compartment, then Teddy Grahams and mini pretzels on the sides. They are nice and small and reusable!
Storing the Leftovers
Store leftover Dunkaroo Dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. The dip will firm up as it chills, so let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving again, then give it a quick stir to bring back the soft, creamy texture. If you folded whipped cream into the dip, I would use it within 2-3 days for the best texture.

Frequently Asked Questions
My version is made with butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, cake batter extract, vanilla, and lots of rainbow sprinkles. A lot of recipes use Funfetti cake mix, but I prefer using cake batter extract because it gives you that same flavor with a much smoother, creamier texture.
Yes, I keep homemade Dunkaroo Dip refrigerated when we aren’t eating it. Store it in an airtight container and then let it soften at room temperature for a few minutes before serving again.
You can freeze it, but I personally prefer it fresh or refrigerated because freezing can change the creamy texture. Since it keeps well in the refrigerator and is so quick to make, I usually don’t bother freezing it.
