Super Easy Yellow Rice complements just about any meal. You can make this on the stove top or in the rice cooker. So tasty!
This yellow rice recipe is one of our favorite side dishes. It truly is “super easy” and it seriously goes with almost anything! You can keep it plain or spice it up to go with different meals. If you are in a rush and don’t have time to make it over the stove, you can also throw all the ingredients in a rice cooker. My family loves this light and fluffy side dish and you will too!
What is Yellow Rice?
Yellow rice is basically white rice that is colored by the spices turmeric or saffron when prepared. This yellow rice recipe calls for turmeric, but you could easily substitute saffron and achieve the same bright yellow color and a slightly tangy flavor. Yellow rice is traditional in Spanish, Cuban, Indian and Indonesian dishes, plus many more. The flavor is mild enough that you can serve it with countless recipes.
Ingredients in Yellow Rice
- Butter – This is used to toast the rice giving it a nice golden, brown color.
- Long-Grain White Rice – Jasmine or basmati rice work great!
- Chicken Broth – Using broth instead of water gives depth and richness to the flavor of the rice.
- Seasonings – Garlic, onion powder, turmeric, salt, and pepper season this rice perfectly.
- Fresh Cilantro – Stir this in after the rice has cooked for added flavor and color.
How to Make Yellow Rice
- Toast the Rice: Toasting the rice in some butter before you boil it gives it an amazing, nutty flavor. Melt the butter in a saucepan and gently stir the rice until it begins to lightly brown. You definitely don’t want to skip this step!
- Season the Rice: Stir in the garlic, onion powder, turmeric, salt, and pepper.
- Add Chicken Broth: Once the chicken broth is added, raise the heat and bring it to a boil and cover. Simmer for 20-25 minutes.
- Fluff the Rice: Remove the rice from the stove and use a fork to fluff the rice. Stir in the chopped cilantro. Reserve a little extra for garnish.
Yellow Rice Recipe Variations
The possibilities for this rice recipe are endless! Mix and match any of these to create the perfect, easy yellow rice side-dish for your next family meal.
- More Veggies: Adding frozen peas or carrots to the rice while cooking is an easy way to add color, texture, and added nutrients.
- Cajun-Style: Make this dish Cajun style by adding diced onion, red and/or green bell pepper, and diced jalapeño while sautéing the rice. Sprinkle with Cajun seasoning before adding the chicken broth. After the rice is finished cooking, you can stir in grilled smoked sausage, shrimp or chicken. Red or black beans make the meal even more hearty and delicious.
- Indian Flavors: For a more Indian flair, add ½ teaspoon of sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, four cardamom pods, and a handful of golden raisins before bringing to boil. So yummy!
- Mexican Side Dish: Add this side to your Mexican dishes by adding jalapeño and diced onion to the rice while sautéing, and sprinkle with a little cumin before adding the broth.
How to Make Yellow Rice in a Rice Cooker
You can also throw all the ingredients in a rice cooker to make yellow rice that way. It’s a secret weapon for making the rice extra fluffy, and it can save up space on the stovetop. I like this one from Aroma Housewares that can make up to 6 cups of cooked rice, which is more than enough for this yellow rice recipe.

I recently became a fan of Turmeric and adding this to the rice has been a game changer. We are enjoying this Turmeric Rice side dish almost every week. I had read Turmeric is a healthy spice, thank you from my family.
I am not a fan of cilantro so I omit.
Getting a great tasting and colorful side dish is an absolute must and this one fits the bill perfectly, it’s delicious!
This looks so good. We will try this recipe with a few tweaks.
We love this version of a different rice dish
Love this with my creamy lemon fish. Perfect as a side for anything really. I’ve had it as a meal as well. Very yummy. Thank you.
This recipe is easy and yummy! It’s a great, quick side dish any day of the week!
This yellow rice is fantastic when we have taco night ! The whole pot full gets eaten! Love it!
Love the idea of making this for taco night!
I eat a lot of rice and potatoes, turmeric is good for inflammation, now I have another recipe that I can use for turmeric. I think I will make this Sunday to go with my pork chops!
Yes there are so many great benefits to eating turmeric! Glad you found another way to use it. Let us know how it turns out with the pork chops 🙂
This recipe was easy and as tasty as the store-bought stuff – but made with ingredients I control- not a bunch of chemicals! Love it and thanks for the recipe!
Couldn’t agree more! It’s so easy to make and without preservatives and unknown ingredients, why not make it at home?
I’m not a big rice eater, buy this rice was different for me. I actually enjoyed eating this rice.
So glad this recipe may have helped you turn a corner for rice!
I make this recipe often. It has great flavor as it is. I throw different spices in to mix it up occasionally. I use it as a base layer for layered chicken enchiladas.
That is a fantastic idea! It would be a great layer in layered enchiladas.
i have been making this for years, tastes great and if there is any leftover i will use it for breakfast instead of potatoes
That is such a great idea. I actually love eggs and rice for breakfast!
Good for you & delicious !
So glad you liked it! Thanks!
No rice left behind! I usually buy the yellow rice bag but I decided to google a recipe and try my own. Not hard to do at all. I had everything on hand already. I did add a little more salt after it was done since it tasted bland but other than that I’ll be making this every time I want yellow rice.
Thank you, Deanna! I’m so happy you enjoyed this recipe! 🙂
Super easy but I had to add seasoning salt because it really didn’t have any flavor.
Fairly tasteless but what I did taste was Turmeric. I trusted the recipe and added the full teaspoon but it was far too much. All Turmeric is doing here is coloring the recipe, I’d start with a quarter teaspoon were I to make it again. (Or use Saffron for the color.)
Sorry you didn’t love this recipe, saffron is a great choice for color if you prefer. I have never noticed the turmeric flavor being overpowering, but that’s just me. I wonder if the brand of turmeric you are using has more of an intense flavor?
I agree that it was tasteless. I added a little garlic salt, tasted, added a little regular salt, and still found it to be lacking. Yellow rice is one of my son’s favs, and I thought he’d be thrilled to have a homemade version rather than something out of a box/bag. I could tell he was underwhelmed.
Sorry this wasn’t a win for you. Definitely feel free to any extra seasonings to make it more to your personal tastes.
Love this recipe!! I was missing the packaged yellow rice since changing my diet to whole food plant based. I don’t use oil or butter when cooking so just left it out of the recipe and it was amazing and tasted so much like the packaged rice!
Hi Sandi! So glad you like this recipe! Glad it turned out like the packaged rice you know and love 🙂
What is the serving size for the nutrition facts for this recipe? I made it and it was a huge hit!

Very easy to make and so delicious!
Thanks so much!
Luv IT, thanks was in a pinch and you came thru 🙂
Yay! So happy this recipe was a success!
This was super easy and super delicious! I added frozen peas and carrots at the end and my 1 year old gobbled it down! She doesn’t seem to like pasta or quinoa or potatoes so it can be hard to find a starch she’ll eat other than bread. I will be making this again and again! Thank you for the recipe.
So glad you found a winner for your 1-year-old! As a mom of 3, I know what a big deal that is! Glad to hear she liked it so much. Thanks for your comment!
