Why I Love This Fresh Fruit Dessert
My first experience with fruit pizza was at a Pampered Chef party years ago, and I loved it right away. It is basically a dessert pizza made with a sugar cookie crust, a sweet cream cheese layer, and fresh fruit on top. What’s not to love?
I especially like making this Fruit Pizza Recipe in the summer when fresh fruit is easy to find at farmers markets, grocery stores, or even in your own garden. We live in an area where the late summer peaches are so good, and honestly, I could eat a whole fruit pizza topped with just fresh peaches.
Why This Recipe Works
This recipe works so well because the homemade sugar cookie crust is soft and buttery, but sturdy enough to hold the frosting and fruit. The cream cheese frosting adds a little tangy sweetness, and the fruit keeps the whole dessert fresh and colorful. You can make it simple with berries or go all out with patterns, rainbows, flags, flowers, or whatever your kids want to create.

Ingredients You’ll Need

- Butter – Softened butter gives the sugar cookie crust its rich flavor and soft texture.
- Sugars – A mix of granulated sugar and brown sugar makes the crust sweet, soft, and slightly chewy.
- Eggs – Eggs help hold the cookie crust together and give it structure.
- Vanilla extract – Adds warm, sweet flavor to the crust.
- Dry ingredients – Baking powder, salt, and flour create the base for the homemade sugar cookie dough.
- Cream cheese – Use softened cream cheese so the frosting mixes up smooth and creamy.
- Powdered sugar – Sweetens the cream cheese frosting without making it grainy.
- Fresh berries – Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries are colorful and easy to arrange.
- Fresh peaches – One of my favorite fruit pizza toppings, especially when peaches are in season.
- Kiwi fruit – Adds a pretty green color and a sweet-tart flavor.
- Other fruit toppings – Grapes, pineapple, mango, mandarin oranges, cherries, apples, and pears can all work well when prepared correctly.
Ingredient Additions and Substitutions
- Store-bought sugar cookie dough: If you need a shortcut, refrigerated sugar cookie dough works. I still prefer the homemade crust when I have the time.
- Lemon curd: A reader suggested cutting back on the sugar and adding a little lemon curd to the frosting. I love this idea for a brighter, less sweet version.
- Vanilla or lemon juice: Add a splash of vanilla or a little lemon juice to the cream cheese frosting for extra flavor.
- Different frosting: Cream cheese frosting is the classic choice, but pastry cream, whipped cream cheese topping, or strawberry frosting would also be good.
- Chocolate drizzle: Add a light drizzle of melted chocolate over strawberries or raspberries.
- Caramel apple fruit pizza: Use thin apple slices, a drizzle of caramel, and chopped nuts.
- Gluten-free option: Use your favorite 1:1 gluten-free flour blend in the cookie crust.
- Different crust: For a less sweet appetizer-style version, try puff pastry, crescent roll dough, or pie crust, depending on your toppings.
How to Make Fruit Pizza

- Preheat oven to 375°F and cream together the butter and sugars; add eggs and vanilla, and beat well.

- Add dry ingredients to form the dough, shape into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 1 hour.

- Roll out the dough into a large circle and place it on a greased pizza pan or stone, pressing evenly.

- Bake for 12–15 minutes, until edges are lightly golden, then let the crust cool completely.

- Mix cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth, then spread over the cooled cookie crust.

- Top with fresh fruit and arrange in fun patterns or designs as desired.
Best Fruit for Fruit Pizza
The best fruit for fruit pizza is fresh, colorful, and not too watery. I like using a mix of fruits so every slice gets a little variety.
Good fruit options include:
- Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries
- Tree fruits: Peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, cherries, and plums
- Tropical fruit: Kiwi, mango, pineapple, and mandarin oranges
- Grapes: Use seedless grapes and cut them in half so they are easier to eat
Fruits to be careful with:
- Bananas: They taste great but brown quickly, so add them right before serving.
- Apples and pears: Toss with a little lemon juice to slow browning.
- Canned fruit: Drain very well and pat dry before using.
- Melons: I usually avoid them because they release a lot of water and can make the crust soggy.

Decorating Ideas
This is the fun part. You can keep your fruit pizza simple, or make it look fancy without needing any special decorating skills.
- Flower design: Use sliced peaches, strawberries, apples, pears, or mandarin oranges as petals, then place a berry in the center.
- American flag fruit pizza: Make the crust in a rectangle pan and use strawberries and blueberries for a 4th of July dessert.
- Rainbow fruit pizza: Use raspberries, peaches, bananas, kiwi, blueberries, and grapes in colorful rows.
- Caramel apple pizza: Use apple slices to decorate the top of the pizza, then drizzle with caramel and sprinkle with chopped nuts
- Sunburst: Use pineapple, mandarin oranges, peaches, and strawberries in a bright circle pattern.
- Kid-friendly design: Let kids make faces, animals, hearts, stars, or their own fruit patterns.
- Simple circles: Arrange fruit in rings so every slice gets a little bit of each topping.
Recipe Tips
- Chill the dough. This makes the dough easier to work with and helps the crust hold its shape while baking.
- Do not use a pizza pan with holes. A regular pizza pan, pizza stone, or baking sheet works better for this cookie crust.
- Press the dough evenly. If the center is too thick, it may bake unevenly. Try to keep it the same thickness all the way across.
- Cool the crust completely. Warm crust will melt the cream cheese frosting and make the fruit slide around.
- Use softened cream cheese. Cold cream cheese can leave lumps in the frosting.
- Pat fruit dry. This is one of the best ways to keep the crust from getting soggy.
- Cut fruit into thin, bite-size pieces. It makes the pizza easier to slice and eat.
- Assemble close to serving time. Fruit pizza is best the day it is made, especially after the fruit is added.
- Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Wipe the blade between slices if you want clean cuts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Fruit pizza is a dessert made with a sugar cookie crust, cream cheese frosting, and fresh fruit on top. It looks like a pizza, but it is sweet and served as dessert.
Most fruit pizza crusts are made from sugar cookie dough. You can use homemade sugar cookie dough or refrigerated store-bought dough if you need a shortcut.
Yes, store-bought sugar cookie dough works well for an easy fruit pizza. I prefer the flavor and texture of the homemade crust, but the shortcut version is great when you are short on time.
Let the crust cool completely, spread the frosting over the crust as a barrier, and pat the fruit dry before adding it. Avoid watery fruits like melon and do not assemble it too far in advance.
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, peaches, grapes, mango, pineapple, and mandarin oranges all work well. Use fresh fruit when possible.
Fresh fruit is best, but canned fruit can work if it is drained really well and patted dry. Too much liquid can soften the cookie crust.
I do not recommend frozen fruit for fruit pizza. It usually gets too soft and watery after thawing.
Yes, but add banana slices right before serving because they brown quickly. You can brush them lightly with lemon juice to help slow the browning.
A fruit tart is usually made in a tart pan with a pastry crust and a custard or cream filling. Fruit pizza is made with a cookie crust, cream cheese frosting, and fresh fruit, usually on a pizza pan.
Yes. You can press the dough into a circle on a regular baking sheet or make it in a rectangle pan. A rectangle fruit pizza is great for parties because it is easy to cut into squares.
Yes. Divide the dough into smaller cookie rounds, bake them, cool completely, then frost and top each one with fruit. Mini fruit pizzas are fun for parties and kids.

Make Ahead and Storage
- Make ahead: Bake the sugar cookie crust up to 1 day ahead and keep it tightly covered at room temperature. You can also make the cream cheese frosting ahead and refrigerate it in an airtight container.
- Assembling: For the best texture, assemble the fruit pizza the day you plan to serve it. If needed, you can assemble it a few hours ahead and keep it refrigerated.
- Storing: Store leftover fruit pizza covered in the refrigerator. It is best eaten within 1 to 2 days because the fruit will soften and the crust may lose some of its texture.
- Freezing: I do not recommend freezing fully assembled fruit pizza. The fruit gets watery and the crust can become soggy. You can freeze the baked cookie crust by itself, then thaw before frosting and decorating.
Pairing Ideas
Fruit Pizza is a great dessert for BBQs, potlucks, baby showers, bridal showers, and summer dinners. It pairs well with Grilled Hamburgers, BBQ Hot Dogs, Honey BBQ Chicken, Macaroni Salad, Corn on the Cob, or a simple sandwich spread.

I’d like to make the fruit pizza as an appetizer instead of a dessert. Any ideas what could be used for the crust instead of a sugar cookie?
Maybe puff pastry? Or pie crust?
I have made with crescent rolls before- but everyone prefers the sugar cookie- just depends on what you put on for toppings I think!
The prettiest and most fresh dessert ever. LOVED using the fruit I had on hand to make this dessert. We hvae all berries at the moment. Can’t wait to try your caramel apple version!
Can you freeze this. Barbhood50@yahoo.com
Yes! You can cover with plastic wrap and freeze until you are ready to serve. Allow to thaw 10-20 minutes before serving. Hope this helps!
That fruit pizza is gorgeous. Bonus…looks so much easier to make than a regular fruit tart. And looks like it will taste just as good.
Totally agree 😉 Thanks!
Could I use a 9×13 cake pan ? I have a very small oven.
Yes, you definitely can use a cake pan instead. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it is cooking through how you want it to.
Can i put cool whip in when making the crust?
You can definitely try it, I think it would be a great option if you are looking to make it more of a whipped topping. Let us know how it turns out!
Does cream cheese have to be room temp or can it be cold before mixing with powder sugar?
It is best when softened (at room temp)
It should be close as close to room temperature as possible. If not, it will have clumps in it when mixed with the sugar. Thanks for asking!
I don’t have a pizza pan the dig or a stone. Can I just put it on a cookie sheet
Definitely!
Absolutely! That would work just fine.
Is that a 12 or 16 inch pizza pan? Can’t wait to try this. Looks yummy!
Hi Shirley, the pizza pan I used is actually 15 inches. I think a 16 inch would work great. Thanks for asking!
I love this fruit pizza! Would love to have your recipe book. Where can I find it?
Thank you, Barbara. We are talking with our publisher about a reprint. We are hoping to have it available again soon.
Making this soon! What are the amounts to use, for the strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi?.
Hi Karen, you can use as much or as little as you would like. I usually purchase the smallest container of strawberries and blueberries, and I usually use 3-4 kiwi depending on the size. Thanks!
How well do these hold up in the refrigerator overnight? Will the crust soggy?
It does get a little softer, but not soggy. Make sure the fruit is as dry as possible if you are going to refrigerate it overnight. Thanks for asking!
I have had this before and love it. Now I can make my own and impress others , thank you for the recipe.
You’re welcome! 🙂
Looks good but I noticed the cook had peeled the kiwi- my granddaughter taught me to loosen it with a spoon and the kiwi slides right out then you can slice it! Saves time !
I also remember this recipe from a Pampered Chef party some years ago and I never forgot it. I have been looking for it ever since I lost my original copy of it. Thank the heavens I found it! This is exactly the one I remember, too. Thank YOU for posting it!!!

I love this recipe! Can you keep the cookie dough refrigerated for longer than an hour? Even overnight? Or does it make it dry out? Just wondering if I can make this ahead of time for Easter so the day of won’t be so hectic! Thanks!
Yes, you can make it ahead. Take the dough out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before you roll it out. Keep it wrapped in the plastic wrap until you are ready to use it. Thanks for asking!
I want to make this for a swim party today. It looks amazing!!
Let us know how it goes, and have fun at your party!
