Author Note

The first time I had a deep fried Oreo was at a fair in Spokane, WA called “Pig Out in the Park” (with a name like that, you know the food’s gonna be food). While waiting in line, I peeked into the food truck and spotted boxes of pancake batter. Could it really be that simple? Just Oreos and pancake batter? I had to try it at home, and sure enough, that’s all it takes. My homemade version turned out just as delicious as the fair’s, but way cheaper and in mere minutes. I can make a whole batch for the price of one tiny tray!

Whether it be these fried Oreos, warm Fry Bread, crispy and cool Fried Ice Cream, warm and pillowy Homemade Doughnuts, decadent filled Malasadas, or sweet and salty Kettle Corn, sometimes you just need a little fair food fix. Who needs crowds and overpriced snacks when you can deep fry dessert in your own kitchen, in your stretchy pants, with zero judgment? Treat yourself and enjoy every bite!

Key Ingredients and Supplies

Ingredients to make Deep Fried Oreos including vegetable oil, milk, Bisquick, vanilla, egg, powdered sugar and Oreos.

Deep fryer – You can use a deep fryer or I actually often use my electric fondue pot to heat my oil and keep it at a consistent heat.

Oil for frying – Use a neutral oil with a high smoke point such as vegetable oil, canola oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, or even corn oil. All of these have a smoke point of 400°F and higher so they are all great for frying.

Double Stuf Oreos – It’s gotta be “Double Stuf” to get that gooey, creamy center like they have at the fair. Also, just a little personal note here: Double Stuf Oreos are the best Oreos, hands-down. Why do they even bother making any other kind of Oreo?

Pancake batter – The batter is simply made with pancake mix, an egg, milk, oil, and a splash of vanilla extract.

How to Make Deep Fried Oreos

Glass mixing bowl with batter and whisk on the side.
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the pancake mix, egg, milk, vanilla extract, and vegetable oil. If the batter seems too runny, stir in a bit more pancake mix, about a tablespoon at a time, until it thickens up.

  1. Coat the Oreo in batter, then gently place it on a metal slotted spoon. Lower the spoon into the oil, let the Oreo slide off, and give it a little nudge with another spoon if needed. This keeps your hands far from the hot oil.

  1. Fry for 3–4 minutes, turning now and then, until golden brown on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to remove the Oreos and set them on paper towels to drain off the excess oil.

  1. Transfer to a serving plate and dust with powdered sugar if you’d like. Enjoy right away while they’re warm and gooey!

Serving Ideas and Variations

You can serve these Oreos plain or with a dusting of powdered sugar, but why stop there? Take these Oreos to the next level and try them with one of our Dessert Dipping Sauces (chocolate, raspberry and caramel), Chocolate Fondue, Cheesecake Fondue, or our Hot Fudge Sauce. You can also try dipping them in our Fresh Strawberry Jam or Strawberry Syrup.

Pro Tips and Suggestions

Try Freezing Your Oreos – It’s not required, but lightly freezing them for 10–15 minutes can help them hold their shape and keep from getting too soft while frying.

Thicken the Batter, If Needed – Your pancake batter should be on the thicker side. You really want it to coat the Oreo. If it’s too thin, it’ll slide right off. Add extra pancake mix a tablespoon at a time until it sticks well.

Don’t Overcrowd the Pot – Fry just a few Oreos at a time. If you add too many, the oil temperature will drop and they’ll absorb more oil, making them soggy instead of crispy.

Drain Well on Paper Towels – As soon as they’re golden and puffed, let them rest on paper towels to soak up any excess oil.

Serve Immediately – These little morsels are best served hot and fresh! The longer they sit, the softer the coating gets, so plan to eat them soon after frying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a deep fryer to make fried Oreos?

Nope! You can fry them in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Just be sure to use a thermometer to keep the oil at 375°F. You can also use an electric fondue pot and set the temperature (my favorite alternative to a deep fryer).

Can I air fry deep fried Oreos?

You can try, but it won’t give you quite the same crispy, golden shell. For the best results, stick with deep frying.

Can I make fried Oreos ahead of time?

These are definitely best when served hot and fresh. If you need to make them ahead, reheat in the air fryer to bring back some of that crispy texture, but they still won’t be quite the same as fresh.

Notes

Don’t Overcrowd the Pot – Fry just a few Oreos at a time. If you add too many, the oil temperature will drop and they’ll absorb more oil, making them soggy instead of crispy.
Troubleshooting: If your Oreos are having a tough time staying together in the fryer, try thickening the batter more or freezing the Oreos for 15-30 minutes to allow them to cool and harden.
