Why I Love This Dip
I’m a huge fan of sweet potato fries, but I’m pretty picky about the dip. I can’t stand super sweet sauces that overpower the natural flavor of the fries—so I set out to create the perfect dip. I wanted something creamy, flavorful, and just a little spicy, without being too overwhelming.
This Sweet Potato Fries Dipping Sauce is the result of that quest—and it’s absolutely perfect. The combo of chipotle powder, lime, and a few other spices creates a balance that enhances the sweetness of the fries without drowning it out. Plus, it has just the right amount of heat. It’s not crazy spicy (unless you want it to be), just enough to add some depth. I honestly can’t imagine eating sweet potato fries without it now! This dipping sauce is a must for our Baked Sweet Potato Fries but is also great with our Baked Potato Wedges and Air Fryer French Fries.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Mayonnaise – This forms the creamy base of the dip. You can also use light mayo or Greek yogurt for a lighter version.
- Fresh Lime Juice – I love the fresh zing of lime, but bottled lime juice will work if that’s all you have.
- Chipotle Powder – Smoky and a little spicy, this is the key to that amazing flavor.
- Chili Powder – Adds a touch of heat and depth to the dip.
- Paprika – For a mild sweetness and beautiful color.
- Cumin – A warm, earthy flavor that rounds out the dip.
- Garlic Powder – Savory and aromatic without the hassle of fresh garlic.
- Sweet Potato Fries – for dipping!
How to Make Sweet Potato Fries Dipping Sauce
- Mix everything together: In a bowl, combine the mayo, lime juice, and all the spices (chipotle powder, chili powder, paprika, cumin, and garlic powder).
- Stir until it’s smooth and creamy.
- Taste and adjust: This is where you can get creative! If you want more spice, add a little cayenne or hot sauce.
- Chill and serve: Let the dip sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors come together. It’s so worth the wait!
Flavor Tips for This Dip
- Want more heat? You can totally make this dip spicier by adding cayenne pepper, sriracha, or even your favorite hot sauce. If you’re like me and love a little extra kick, go for it!
- Lime flavor: Fresh lime juice really makes a difference, but if you’re in a pinch, bottled lime juice works too.
- Make it Lighter: You can use light mayo, or swap the mayo for Greek yogurt or light sour cream for a healthier version.
- Add sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter dip, stir in a little maple syrup or brown sugar. It adds a nice balance to the heat!
Sweet Potato Fries to Use
- Baked Sweet Potato Fries: Simple to make and healthier than fried.
- Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries: Quick and crispy with minimal oil. Toss fresh cut fries in a little oil and cook at 400-degrees for 20 minutes shaking basket a few times. If using frozen sweet potato fries, cook in the air fryer at 400-degrees F for 10-12 minutes.
- Sweet Potato Wedges: A thicker fry for those who like a heartier bite. Bake at 450-degrees for 35 minutes.

The heat in this dip is mild—there’s just enough to give it some depth without burning your mouth. But if you’re sensitive to spice, you can easily adjust the amount of chipotle powder or chili powder to suit your tastes. If you want it spicier, just add more!

Sweet Potato Fries Dipping Sauce
Ingredients
- 4 sweet potatoes or yams
- 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
- Kosher salt
For the Dip:
- 1 1/4 cups mayonnaise
- 1/2 lime juiced
- 1 teaspoon ground chipotle powder
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Mix up the chipotle lime dip at least an hour before serving so the spices have a chance to blend together: in a small bowl, mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cut the sweet potatoes into long sticks and place them in a large Ziploc bag. Add just enough vegetable oil to lightly coat the potatoes, seal the bag and toss to distribute the oil evenly.
- Evenly layer the potatoes onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, turning often until lightly browned. Remove from oven and sprinkle on Kosher salt, to taste.
- Serve with the chipotle lime dip.

I just made this today and the flavor is very good. It has a little heat with the lime and cumin is great with sweet potato fries. As we love garlic and cumin I doubled those. It is great for a dipping sauce for many other things as well I would think. Chicken nuggets (the GF frozen bag at Trader Joe’s are awesome), regular fries, sauteed or grilled shrimp etc. Thanks for the recipe.
You’re welcome, Cindy. I’m happy you enjoyed it! Thank you for your comment and review.
Great as-is (though I added a little hot honey, which adds a nice little sweetness).
Ooh that’s a great idea! I am always looking for reasons to use my hot honey!
Absolutely delicious, thank you! I made a small batch for 2 people so I didn’t measure., just added a bit of everything.
Hi! Half of what for the line juice?
Half of a lime, juiced.
Isn’t there a ‘dip’ for sweet potato fries that is sweet?? Kind of like at Thanksgiving time when you have melted butter and marshmallows on them??
I haven’t heard of that but it sounds delicious!!

The dip is the BEST! Perfect pairing with the sweet potato fries. I’ve never enjoyed them with ketchup but this dip totally makes the sweet potato shine.
Can these be cooked in an air fryer?
Absolutely! We love making fries in the air fryer!
This sauce is addictive! Soooo flavorful. I added additional chipotle chili to further that deep flavor. Thank you, thank you! Best dip for fries, ever!
Fantastic!! Quick sidenote for folks who bake them is to cut the fries and soak them in water at the very least 30 minutes up to overnight to remove excess startch and wind up with perfectly crispy, healthier sweet potatoe fry!
Omg that dip is to die for! Had it with corn chips and for breakfast with chicken strips!
