This Barbecue Chicken Pizza recipe was inspired by a local pizza joint I used to frequent in California. When we moved from California, I craved the sweet, savory, and tangy flavors of this pizza and started recipe testing. Let me tell you, this homemade version is even better than the original. The fresh cilantro and sweet pineapple add a unique twist that will have everyone asking for seconds. It’s a crowd-pleaser on pizza night, game day, or for weeknight dinners.
Ingredients Needed
- Pizza Dough: Try our Homemade Pizza Dough recipe, it’s easy to follow and you can easily adjust the thickness to your preference. If you are short on time, store-bought dough or a pre-made pizza crust are both great alternatives.
- Semi-Homemade BBQ Sauce: Start with the following ingredients, then add 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce.
- Olive oil – For sautéing the garlic and adding flavor.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic is best.
- Tomato base – Tomato sauce, tomato paste, and a fresh tomato.
- Seasonings – Fresh cilantro, basil, oregano, salt and pepper.
- Pizza Toppings:
- Chicken breasts – Grilled and sliced. For extra flavor, prepare our Honey BBQ Chicken and use it on the pizza.
- Cheeses – Cheddar and mozzarella combine to give the pizza extra cheesy flavor.
- Pineapple tidbits – Fresh or canned both work great. Be sure to drain well.

Barbecue Chicken Pizza
Ingredients
- 2 prepared pizza dough uncooked
Barbecue Pizza Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 8 ounces tomato sauce
- 6 ounces tomato paste
- 1 tomato
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro
- 2 teaspoons basil
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup BBQ sauce
Pizza Toppings
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 8 ounces pineapple tidbits, drained (or ¾ cup diced fresh pineapple)
- 2 chicken breasts, grilled and sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
Instructions
Prepare the Sauce
- Finely chop the fresh tomato, set aside. Sauté minced garlic in olive oil in the bottom of a saucepan. Add the fresh tomato and remaining ingredients to the pan, except the BBQ sauce. Simmer the sauce for 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in BBQ sauce.
Make the Pizza
- Roll the pizza dough onto two pizza pans or pizza stones.
- Spread the sauce evenly over the pizza dough.
- Top the pizzas evenly with cheeses and drained pineapple tidbits. Bake at 400° for 12-15 minutes.
- Remove pizzas from oven. Add grilled chicken slices and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Slice and serve.
